Royal Exchange

So often, the most interesting sights in London are seen by looking up. However, one of my favourite features of the Royal Exchange is right at eye level: the shop numbers. They may share identical placing and cream backgrounds, but all are distinctive. Among the grandeur of the City's financial institutions, these humbler details have a charm all their own.

I truly love being in the Royal Exchange. Not for buying luxury items but for window shopping, starring at the architecture and thinking of the history that went past this bit of London.

It does seem odd that the numbers are all different. I guess that numbers were not included in the original design (presumably it was just one big building) and that when it was divided up, each tenant had to affix the number. They add a note of individuality within the general uniformity.
